Chapter 14

Worse than death

As Grandpa told his story, his heartbeat quickened, which worried Dr Sciutto :

—Calm down, David, she says. You're safe here and nothing can happen to you.

—If you only knew what I've been through, Doctor. And in my mind, it doesn't all seem so long ago. Because what happened next is beyond comprehension. I must continue my story.

Our ship was ready to enter hyperspace. The colonel started the countdown. Four, three, two, one... and suddenly a powerful flash lit us up and shut down all our systems. The humanoids deactivated and fell. Sun stopped responding. And it wasn't long before I felt a great fatigue against which I couldn't fight for long. I had time to watch the whole team fall: Daniela, Colonel Jones and you too, McKay. When I woke up, I was in a black room with red lines of light on the walls representing rectilinear graphic shapes, a bit like the ones in the ship where you found me. It looked like some kind of language, I think. The room was immense, impossible to make out anything. It was as if I were suspended in mid-air but paralyzed, as if my limbs were bound.

—Hey! Oh! Anybody home? I exclaimed.

—David? Where are you? Are you all right? I heard not far from me.

—Daniela! You're alive! Where are we? What happened?

—I don't know, David, but I'm scared. Help me, we've got to get out of here!

—I can't, I'm paralyzed. The more I struggle against the magnetic force holding me back, the more resistance it presents.

—We're on board the alien ship. What will they do to us?

McKay and Jones came to their senses. Not far from me I also heard our scientist grumble:

—Oh ... my ... head .... but ... but!? I'm paralyzed, what's going on??

—I'm here, McKay, this is David.

—David?! But what's happening? Are we on Earth? Is this a dream? I blacked out. Yes, this must be a dream. I think the hyperspace ion charge sent me over the edge and I'm dreaming. Phew, we're safe, I thought for a moment we were on the ship that was drawing us to itself. Scary, isn't it? I'd never have wanted to set foot aboard, even if I'd been paid a million credits and...

—Shut up, McKay, we're prisoners aboard this ship of doom and God knows what they're going to do to us!

Jones regained consciousness. We all exchanged a few moments to make sure we were all okay. The room was dark and we couldn't see each other. While we were deep in conversation, I felt my mouth close, and I think it was the same for the others. It was as if, in spite of myself, something was controlling my nervous system and overriding my will. And the more I tried to fight it, the stronger it became. So, I resigned myself to keeping quiet and letting it happen to save my strength, because this mysterious energy had the power to use my own strength against myself. Moments later, a thud sounded as if thrusters were being activated.
